If you had asked Trevor Rayhons what he wanted to do with his life when he graduated high school in 2014, his answer would be very different than it is now. The UNI senior is from a small farm town called Garner, Iowa and was very interested in music and theater growing up. Rayhons transferred to UNI in 2015 as a vocal performance major. Although he studied music for over seven years, he had a change of heart. Trevor credits Dr. Chris Martin for helping him as a transfer student and encouraging him to be the person he is today in the Department of Communication Studies.
Currently, Trevor is in his final semester at UNI, majoring in Public Relations with a minor in Business Communication. He is actively involved on campus, leading UNI PRSSA as Chapter President and serving as an RA for Lawther Hall. “UNI has provided me with opportunities to be involved in organizations bigger than myself. These have allowed me to travel, meet colleagues from across the nation, and attain real-world experiences. These experiences have shaped me to be a better version of myself,” says Trevor.
When asked what professors have shaped his experience, Trevor mentioned a few Comm Department faculty members. “Jeffrey Brand has mentored me in public relations and has helped foster me into being the leader I am today. Marilyn Shaw has also been a mentor in my personal life and encouraged me to be me,” he says. Courses that stood out for Trevor during his college career include Interpersonal Communication, Principles of Public Relations, and PR Cases and Studies.
Upon graduation, Trevor will be attending DePaul University in Chicago, IL to pursue a Master of Arts in Public Relations and Advertising. He is interested in healthcare-focused organizations, and begins his career in that field with a position as media relations and digital communications intern at Pfizer's world headquarters in New York City in summer 2018.
