Speech Team Captures Second in Sweepstakes at Bradley-Illinois State Tournament

The UNI Forensics team has been extremely busy over the past couple of weeks. Last weekend, we hosted the Brindley Invitational. This two-day tournament is an all events high school tournament featuring five major speech and debate events. We had 18 schools and 294 students registered. This is the largest Brindley we have hosted in the past four years. West Des Moines Dowling Catholic High School won the speech sweepstakes, while West Des Moines Valley won the debate sweepstakes.

The speech team competed at the 74 Swing Tournament at Bradley University and Illinois State. The team won second in sweepstakes, and many students won individual awards:

3rd Place (Bradley) and 4th Place (ISU) in After Dinner Speaking

2nd Place in Poetry Interpretation (Bradley)
3rd (ISU) and 4th (Bradley) in Program Oral Interpretation
Semifinalist in Prose Interpretation (ISU)

Mandy Paris
4th in Duo Interpretation with Harrison Postler (Bradley)

Ryan Courtney
5th in Prose Interpretation (Bradley)
5th in Duo Interpretation with Ryan Courtney (ISU)

Keegan Bosh - Top Novice in Poetry Interpretation (Bradley & ISU)

Champion in Impromptu Speaking (ISU) & 3rd Place (Bradley)
3rd in Extemporaneous Speaking (Bradley)

Anthony Peavy - Prose Interpretation Champion (Bradley)
Chris Apling - 5th Place in Dramatic Interpretation (ISU)

This weekend, the speech team will take a much needed break from travel to prepare for their next competition. The debate team travels to Kansas City this weekend to compete at the KCKCC Blue Devil Debates.

We also hosted Iowa Supreme Court Justice Zager in SEC 252 at on Friday, Oct. 12, in an event free and open to the public.
