Research Interests

My research critically analyzes how the news media cover labor and class issues. I also investigate media narratives on sports, politics, and other topics. My work has been published in places like Journalism Studies, Journal of Communication Inquiry, Communication Research, Labor Research Journal, Popular Music and Society, Journal of Communication, Perspectives on Politics, Z magazine, Editor & Publisher, Huffington Post and Népszabadság, Hungary’s leading quality daily newspaper. I am also on the editorial board of the Journal of Communication Inquiry.

Mass Communication and Society, News Writing, Advanced Reporting, Introduction to Graduate Study and Research, Ethics in Communication, and a number of electronic media courses.

Personal/Professional Interests

With Richard Campbell and Bettina Fabos, I am co-author of Media and Culture: Mass Communication in a Digital Age (Bedford/St. Martin's, 2016), now in its 10th edition, and Media Essentials (Bedford/St. Martin's, 2013), in its 2nd edition. I am author of Framed! Labor and the Corporate Media (Cornell University Press, 2004), an award-winning book on how labor unions are covered in the news media. I also blog on journalism and news issues at

I previously taught at Miami University (Ohio), and have been a visiting instructor at the University of Klagenfurt in Austria. I received my Ph.D. degree from the University of Michigan.  I'm a recipient of the State of Iowa’s Board of Regents Award for Faculty Excellence (2004), the College of Humanities and Fine Arts Faculty Excellence Award (2010), and the Veridian Community Engagement Award (2011). I chair the Board of Directors of the Northern Iowan newspaper at UNI, and I am past president and a board member of the College Hill Partnership, the organization leading the revitalization of the College Hill neighborhood in Cedar Falls.
